AIPC's Island Waters program is up and running, with all three Island communities, and several non-profit organizations, working together for cleaner water on and around Aquidneck Island. In May, our contractors began work in Portsmouth to inspect stormwater pipes in the Island Park neighborhood, using a mobile, self-propelled videocamera in the pipes. The purpose is to identify illegal discharges, deteriorating pipes and other sources of water pollution, while developing a standard approach that other communities can use throughout Rhode Island. In early June, the Island Waters partners met to begin developing the list of stormwater priorities that will be constructed under the project. Beginning with a list of nearly 100 potential projects, the partners are using a prioritization model to select the most cost-effective solutions to clean up fresh and salt waters. We'll then complete engineering and construction of stormwater solutions in all three Island communities, in order to reduce pollution of the Island's drinking water system and our most valuable coastal waters.
